In the live-action adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s cherished animation classic Princess Mononoke, Zendaya will play the part of San, the ferocious and mysterious wolf princess. In keeping with its ageless environmental and philosophical themes, this enormous project, which Warner Bros. and Studio Ghibli announced, intends to transfer the wonder of Hayao Miyazaki’s 1997 masterpiece to a new audience.
Zendaya, fresh off her critically acclaimed performances in Dune and Euphoria, shared her excitement for the role, stating, “San is a character with so much depth and strength, and I feel honored to bring her story to life for a new generation.”
Joining Zendaya in the cast is Oscar Isaac as Ashitaka, the cursed prince on a journey to broker peace between humanity and the natural world. Veteran actress Angela Bassett will voice Moro, the wolf goddess and San’s adoptive mother, bringing gravitas and wisdom to the role. Rounding out the cast is Willem Dafoe as the calculating industrialist Jiko-bo and Florence Pugh as Lady Eboshi, the complex leader of Iron Town.
